Lezen

Lezen (Basisexamen)

The reading part of the Basisexamen, sat at an embassy: short texts read on a screen, with the questions read aloud to you.

Hoe laat …?
Look for the digits. If the text shows two times, one of them belongs to a different day.
Waar …?
A place name or a room. Often two are named and only one is the answer.
Wie …?
A person or a role: de dokter, de leraar, uw buurman. The text names more than one.
Wat kost …?
A price. Check which group it applies to before you take it.
niet / geen
One small word that reverses the answer. Listen for it when the question is read.

Grammatica

Vraagwoorden

The question word decides what kind of answer counts — a place, a time, a person, a reason.

Waar haalt u geld uit de muur?
Waar asks for a place. The answer names a location and nothing else.
Wanneer vieren Nederlanders Koningsdag?
Wanneer asks for a time: a date, a day, a part of the year.
Wie helpt u bij een ongeluk?
Wie asks for a person or a body. Wat asks for a thing — the two are one letter apart and mean different answers.
Waarom betaalt u met uw pinpas?
Waarom asks for a reason, and the answer needs omdat or want. A bare fact is not a reason.
Hoeveel kost een kaartje voor de bus?
Hoe asks how, hoeveel asks how much. The answer to hoeveel is a number.

Woordvolgorde

The verb stands in second place, and only one thing may stand in front of it.

In Nederland betaalt u met de euro.
Place in slot 1, so the verb comes next and the subject follows it: betaalt u, never u betaalt.
Op 27 april vieren Nederlanders Koningsdag.
A date behaves exactly like a place. Slot 1 is about position, not meaning.
Bij een ongeluk of noodgeval belt u 112.
A long opening is still one slot: five words that together name a single situation.
U betaalt in de winkel met uw pinpas.
Start with the subject and nothing moves. This order is always available to you.

Spreken

Spreken: zin afmaken

You see a photo and the start of a sentence. You say the whole sentence, with the missing word at the end.

De man leest een … → De man leest een krant.
Een before the gap: one thing comes next. Say the start again, then the word.
De kat slaapt op de … → De kat slaapt op de bank.
Op de asks for a place. Look where the cat is in the photo.
De jongen speelt … → De jongen speelt voetbal.
No een before the gap. A game or a sport often fits here.
In de vaas staat een gele … → In de vaas staat een gele bloem.
The colour is already there. You only add the thing.

Spreken: kort antwoord

You hear a question about yourself. You answer with one short sentence.

Hoe heet u? → Ik heet …
Change u to ik. Here the verb stays the same: heet.
Waar woont u? → Ik woon in …
Waar wants a place. The verb loses its t: woont becomes woon.
Hoe oud bent u? → Ik ben … jaar.
Bent is only for u and je. With ik it is always ben.
Heeft u kinderen? → Ja, ik heb … / Nee, ik heb geen kinderen.
No question word, so start with ja or nee. Heeft becomes heb.
Hoe laat staat u 's ochtends op? → Ik sta om … uur op.
Hoe laat wants a clock time. Op goes to the end, as in the question.
