Aankondiging lezen

Reading an announcement — an event in the neighbourhood, a new rule at work — and answering what you can or must do.

Contents

1.What it is

2 of our A2 reading items carry this code. An aankondiging tells you that something is going to happen: a rommelmarkt on Sunday, a safety rule from Monday. It packs several verbs into a few lines — kopen, huren, dragen, eten, melden — each with its own list of nouns. The difficulty is that the wrong options keep the nouns and swap the verbs, so every word in them is on the page and the combination is not.

2.Picture it

1Wat gebeurt er?2Wanneer?3Wat kunt/moet u doen?4Wat is er nog meer?
What every announcement answers, in the order it usually answers it.

3.How the exam tests this

Part of Lezen, computer-marked, four options. Two kinds appear: an event invitation (Kom naar de rommelmarkt…) and a notice about a new rule (Mededeling voor alle medewerkers… Vanaf maandag… verplicht). The questions ask Wat kunt u … doen? or Wat is vanaf maandag verplicht? The wrong options recombine the text: a noun from one sentence with the verb of another (Een kraam met boeken kopen, Boeken en speelgoed huren), or a word that looks like a text word (handschoenen for veiligheidsschoenen).

4.The rule

Kom naar de rommelmarkt in buurthuis De Linde!
The opening line names the event and the place. Kom naar … ! is an invitation, not an instruction.
U kunt tweedehands spullen, boeken en speelgoed kopen.
U kunt … kopen: the verb comes at the very end and belongs to the whole list before it.
Wilt u zelf een kraam huren? Bel dan naar 020-3344556.
A second offer for a different reader — people who want to sell. Huren belongs to kraam and to nothing else.
Vanaf maandag is het dragen van veiligheidsschoenen en een helm in de hele hal verplicht.
Vanaf + day = when the new rule starts. Verplicht comes last; what is compulsory is everything after het dragen van.
Eten en drinken mag alleen in de kantine, niet bij de machines.
A second rule in the same notice. Mag alleen … niet answers a different question — where, not what is compulsory.

5.Examples

  • U kunt tweedehands spullen, boeken en speelgoed kopen. Er is ook koffie, thee en zelfgemaakte taart. De toegang is gratis. Wilt u zelf een kraam huren?

    Boeken en speelgoed huren

Wat kunt u op de rommelmarkt doen? Tweedehands spullen kopen. Een kraam met boeken kopen puts kopen on kraam; Boeken en speelgoed huren puts huren on boeken. Both options use only words from the text — in the wrong pairs.

  • Vanaf maandag is het dragen van veiligheidsschoenen en een helm in de hele hal verplicht. De schoenen krijgt u gratis van het bedrijf; vraag ernaar bij het magazijn.

    Handschoenen kopen

Wat is vanaf maandag verplicht in de hal? Veiligheidsschoenen en een helm dragen. Handschoenen kopen borrows the end of veiligheidsschoenen and adds kopen — but nothing has to be bought: the shoes are free.

6.Watch out

  • Right noun, wrong verb. Boeken are bought, not rented; a kraam is rented, not bought. The option is made of text words, so it feels familiar.
  • A word that looks like a word in the text. Handschoenen shares schoenen with veiligheidsschoenen and means something else entirely: gloves.
  • Answering from the other rule. A notice with verplicht, mag alleen and meld dit direct holds three rules; the question names one of them.

7.In the exam room

Take the verb or key word from the question — doen, kopen, verplicht — find it in the text, and read the list of nouns that belongs to it in that same sentence. An option whose noun comes from one sentence and whose verb comes from another is wrong, however familiar both words look.

Werkwoord en ding: uit dezelfde zin. — The verb and its object come from the same sentence.
