Signaalwoorden
Words like echter, daarom and bovendien tell you where the text is going before you get there.
B1 reading texts are long and the time is not generous. Signal words are the shortcut the text itself offers: each one announces whether what follows agrees with, contradicts, explains or concludes what came before. Learners tend to translate them and move on, when the useful move is to let them predict. A single echter can flip the meaning of an entire paragraph, and the question about that paragraph is usually about which side of the echter the answer sits on.
How the exam tests this
Lezen, and specifically the questions about what the writer thinks or where the text ends up. With roughly six texts and thirty-six questions in the time available, you cannot read every sentence twice, and the signal words are how the text lets you decide which sentences carry the answer. The main-idea questions in particular tend to hang on a single contrast word: everything before it is setup, and the writer's actual position is on the other side.
