Argumentvraag
A question asking which reason the writer gives for their own position — the content of the argument, not its role.
Contents
1.What it is
5 of our B2 reading items. Stems look like Welk argument geeft de docent …?, Waarom vindt de auteur de vergelijking met alcohol gebrekkig? or Waarom noemt de auteur vergeten een prestatie? Three lessons sit close together here. An argumentatie question asks what a sentence does (reason, example, conclusion); a tegenargument question asks for an objection the writer answers; this question asks what the writer's own reason actually says. You are matching content, so the options are four claims, and only one is both in the text and offered as support.

3.How the exam tests this
Lezen for Programma II: about 35–36 multiple-choice questions over roughly 6 texts in 100 minutes, computer-marked. On argument items the wrong options are built from: the writer's position given as if it were the reason; a real argument from the text with its two sides reversed (paper dearer instead of tablet dearer); a claim the writer explicitly denies (Ik ben allerminst tegen technologie); and a plausible reason the writer never gives (Omdat alcohol duurder is). You lose the mark by recognising words instead of checking which way the sentence points.
4.The rule
- Ten eerste … Ten tweede …
- Numbered reasons. The stem often names one of them by its topic; find the right number before you compare options.
- Bovendien adds a second, separate reason. Both reasons can be the answer to Welk argument …?, so check the option against the exact wording of each.
- This announces the writer's verdict; it is not yet the reason. The reason is the next sentence, which says why the comparison fails.
- Daar komt bij dat works like bovendien, but longer. Whatever follows is a reason in its own right, often the one the question asks about.
- …, vermoedelijk doordat een scherm meer afleiding biedt.
- A reason inside a reason. The correct option may fold both into one line, so an option that looks too long is not wrong for that alone.
5.Examples
The wrong option is fluent and long, but the text never says that. The reason is the contrast in effect between the two.
The wrong option uses the letter's other reason — cost — but swaps book and tablet. In the text the broken tablet is the dearer one.
Forgiveness and erasing facts appear later in the column, and the writer says forgiveness needs fading, niet het uitwissen van feiten.
6.Exceptions
Exception 1
Waarom noemt de auteur mensen met zwaar lichamelijk werk? looks like a role question, and the role is indeed an example. But all four options are reasons, so the item wants what the example proves: that a higher pension age weighs disproportionately on them.
7.Watch out
- Choosing a claim the writer rejects. De docent is tegen technologie en digitale hulpmiddelen is the opposite of Ik ben allerminst tegen technologie; the option borrows the words and flips the meaning.
- Reversing a comparison. Most B2 arguments compare two things; the distractor keeps both nouns and swaps which one is better, dearer or stronger.
- Giving your own reason. Omdat alcohol duurder is and Omdat tieners geen alcohol drinken are reasons someone could hold; the writer gives neither.
8.In the exam room
Find the standpunt the stem refers to, then look for the sentence that starts with a reason word — want, doordat, ten eerste, bovendien, daar komt bij. Put the option next to that sentence and check the direction of every comparison.
Niet wát hij vindt, maar wáárom.
