A fine from DUO: why you get one and how to object

DUO does not fine you for failing an exam. A fine relates to missing your integration deadline or not meeting the agreements you made. The fine letter always states the deadline for objecting — that deadline is short, and late is late.

Why a fine happens
- Your integration deadline passed without you meeting your obligation.
- You did not keep to the agreements in your PIP — lessons or activities, for instance.
- **Not:** because you failed a part of the exam. Failing is not an offence.
Objecting, step by step

Read the deadline in the letter
It states the date by which you can object. Write that date down immediately.

Write why you disagree
Short and factual: what happened, and what evidence do you have (illness, a move, agreements with your municipality)?

Send it in time
Keep a copy and proof of sending; the submission date is what counts.

Wait for the decision
If you cannot pay the fine, report that to DUO separately — that is a different procedure from objecting.
If you genuinely cannot pay
Do not leave a fine sitting. Contact DUO about a payment arrangement and your municipality about your situation. Doing nothing makes the problem bigger, not smaller.
